Studies often prove what common sense already tells us: when you put poisons into the soil, it doesn’t just kill its target — it kills everything. If it’s unhealthy to handle a product, it’s unhealthy to eat what that product has come in contact with.
Recent studies have also shown that chemically treated soils often actually show increased numbers of pests and plant damage — whereas organic fields have fewer insect problems. This is from the first paragraph of a fascinating article from Sustainable Agriculture Research & Education called “Impacts of Fertilisers on Insect Pests”:
“A review of 50 years of research identified 135 studies showing more plant damage and/or greater numbers of leaf-chewing insects or mites in nitrogen-fertilised crops, while fewer than 50 studies reported less pest damage. Researchers have demonstrated that high nitrogen levels in plant tissue can decrease resistance and increase susceptibility to pest attacks.”
The article is a short, easy ready, and well-worth it. It makes mention of five successful organic fields from all over the world. Nature knows best! Let’s get the chemicals out of the soil and grow some healthy, natural food.
